Zero to Your First AI Freelance Gig: A Real 0-to-500 Yuan Guide

Xiao Kalami · 2026-06-23 · ~10 min read · Real experience
💡 Who this is for: people who want to start an AI side hustle but don't know where to begin. No followers, no portfolio, no clients—starting from scratch.

I'm a film-editing apprentice with zero coding background. I started exploring AI tools in April 2026. This article documents every pitfall I hit and every method that actually worked.

1. What Do You Need Before Taking Orders?

1. Tool Checklist

ToolUseCost
Jimeng AIText-to-video, image-to-video footageFree tier sufficient
Kling AIHigh-quality image-to-video (backup)Free tier
JianyingEditing, subtitles, voice-overFree
Moyin WorkshopAI voice-over (optional)Free version available
DeepSeekScript and copy writingFree

2. Portfolio (Very Important!)

No portfolio, no clients. But you don't need to wait until it's "perfect"—make 3-5 pieces and put them out there.

Here's what I did:

  1. Fake a client: pretend someone wants a milk-tea shop promotional video
  2. Generate with Jimeng: create milk-tea product showcase footage using Jimeng
  3. Edit in Jianying: add subtitles, BGM, voice-over to produce the final clip
  4. Publish and showcase: post to Douyin, WeChat Moments, or Xiaohongshu

The portfolio doesn't need to be polished—it just needs to show clients what you can do.

3. Pricing Strategy

Service TypeBeginner PriceAfter Gaining Skill
15-second short video50-80 RMB100-200 RMB
30-second promotional video80-150 RMB200-500 RMB
AI special-effects video100-200 RMB200-500 RMB
Product showcase video50-100 RMB100-300 RMB

Beginner pricing principle: go 30-50% below market rate. Use low prices to trade for portfolio pieces and reputation. Once you have 3-5 positive reviews, raise your rates.

2. Where to Find Clients?

Channel 1: Xianyu 🏪

Xianyu is the easiest place for beginners to land their first order. Steps:

Post a "service" item
Title: "AI Video Production · Short Video · Product Promo · AI Effects · Open for Orders" (pack in the keywords)
Description: clearly state what you can do, your rates, and delivery time
Images: screenshots of your portfolio
Price: start at 50 RMB (low price to attract, upgrade later)
💡 Xianyu users search "视频制作" more than "AI视频". Include all relevant keywords in your title.

Channel 2: Xiaohongshu 📕

Xiaohongshu users have higher willingness to pay. Steps:

Post "tutorial + showcase" notes
Example note titles:
"Learn this in Jianying, earn 200 RMB from one video"
"I made a product video with AI—the client ordered on the spot"
Content: first half delivers干货, second half showcases your work, end with a hook: "DM me if you need a video made"

Channel 3: Douyin / WeChat Channels 🎵

Post work + include contact info
Upload your videos, add "Video production services, DM for pricing" in your bio.
Douyin has massive reach—great for showcasing your latest work.
Use trending hashtags: #AI

Channel 4: WeChat Groups / Moments 👥

Don't underestimate this channel! Potential clients are already around you:

💡 Your first gig for an acquaintance can be free or half-price, as long as they're willing to recommend you on their Moments.

Channel 5: Zhubajie / Yiweiqike 💼

Traditional freelance platforms—fierce competition and low prices, but plenty of orders.

3. Workflow: From Order to Delivery

Step 1: Requirement Gathering

Clarify exactly what the client wants:

Key: confirm requirements before quoting! Avoid the "that's not what I wanted" situation after you've already done the work.

Step 2: Write the Script

Use DeepSeek to generate the script:

Send the result to the client for confirmation. Don't proceed until they approve.

Step 3: Generate Video Footage

Step 4: Edit in Jianying

Step 5: Delivery

4. Pitfall Guide

❌ Don't make these mistakes:
  1. Never ask for full payment upfront: always collect a deposit (30-50%) to prevent no-shows. Especially important with new clients.
  2. Don't allow unlimited revisions: state clearly "includes 2 revisions, +30 RMB per additional revision." Otherwise clients will have you revising forever.
  3. Don't take on work you don't understand: if a client says "make me a 3D animation"—and you can't—don't force it. Stick to AI video where you excel.
  4. Don't promise unrealistic deadlines: Jimeng image-to-video queues can take 1-2 hours. Build in enough buffer time.
  5. Don't undercharge: don't waste your time on jobs under 50 RMB. Your time is worth more than that.

5. My First Order Experience

How I landed my first order (May 2026):

  1. Posted a "Full AI Video Production Workflow" tutorial on Xiaohongshu
  2. Someone DMed me: "Can you make a product intro video?"
  3. Quoted 120 RMB (15-second short video)—client accepted
  4. Client sent product photos; I used Jimeng image-to-video to create dynamic footage
  5. Jianying: music + subtitles, done in 30 minutes
  6. Client was very happy and referred 2 more friends afterward

Key factor: that Xiaohongshu tutorial brought in the client. So don't just post your work—posting tutorials demonstrates your expertise.

Summary: the first order is the hardest. Once you start, it gets easier. The key is to just begin. Today: spend 1 hour making 3 portfolio pieces, spend 1 hour posting on Xianyu or Xiaohongshu—tomorrow you might receive your first inquiry.
